What is Subversion, and why?

MiniWikipediaLogoIcon.pngSubversion is a MiniWikipediaLogoIcon.pngversion control system, for keeping track of changes to source code. Subversion allows to

  • see the history of changes made to source code
  • retrieve any version of any file
  • see the difference between any two versions of code
  • see the changes you made locally, compared to the version you originally checked out
  • create patches of any changes
  • update your local copy to the latest version, or any specific version, "merging" changes automatically

This is very useful for those working with source code - looking for bugs, making changes or simply compiling the latest version because of features or bugfixes.

Advantages

This can result in quicker and easier turnaround for features and bugfixes:

  • Changes made by Randy or another ZDoom developer can be made available instantly without uploading a full release, and coders can automatically merge them into their "working copies".
  • Coders can be looking at the most current version of the code, testing it, looking for bugs, adding features. When someone posts a patch, it can be against the latest version, which makes it easier for Randy to integrate, if he decides to. And when he does, changes are again instantly available for everyone.
  • Source control provides a backup of the code at each point where it was checked in. This leads to less loss in the case of unexpected hard drive failure or similar circumstances. It also makes it much easier to go back to the last known working version if that becomes necessary.

Precompiled builds

DRDTeam hosts precompiled SVN builds of ZDoom and a number of other Doom-related programs, notably GZDoom, the Eternity Engine, Doom Builder 2 and SLADE 3. If you missed the giant link on the main page of this wiki, the SVN build site is here.

Repository URL

The ZDoom subversion repository is generously hosted by Manc at http://mancubus.net/svn/hosted/zdoom. Additionally, if you are interested, you may find the GZDoom SVN in nearly the same location at http://mancubus.net/svn/hosted/gzdoom. Be aware, however, that GZDoom takes some additional effort to compile.

Subversion checkout path - If you want just the latest development version of ZDoom, and aren't interested in grabbing the old stable release nor the anciliary tools ZDBSP and ACC, you should use your subversion client to check out http://mancubus.net/svn/hosted/zdoom/zdoom/trunk.

Browse the repository - You can browse the entire zdoom repository and view detailed information (like revision histories, dates, etc.) by pointing your web browser here:

http://mancubus.net/svn/zdoom/

Change log - If you want to view the change log, point your web browser here:

http://mancubus.net/svn/zdoom/?op=log

A text file log also exist containing pre-SVN changes, going as far back as March 1998. It was for a time maintained concurrently with the SVN, but was dropped in January 2010 as redundant. It can be seen here.

GitHub URL

Although ZDoom has moved to a Git repository, it is still possible to use a Subversion client to get the latest revisions thanks to a special GitHub feature.

https://github.com/rheit/zdoom

Getting the sources

Using Subversion's own utilities

Download Subversion tools at http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html . Add the directory where you installed them to PATH.

To check out ZDoom sources, open a command prompt window and:

cd c:\path\to\where\you\want\sources
svn checkout http://mancubus.net/svn/hosted/zdoom/zdoom/trunk

To update previously checked-out sources:

cd c:\same\path\as\before
svn up

Using TortoiseSVN (Windows Explorer plug-in)

Download TortoiseSVN from TortoiseSVN.net.

To check out ZDoom sources,

There is also a Firefox plugin for TortoiseSVN at Pumacode.org. You need to install TortoiseSVN first for it to work, of course.

Note: TortoiseSVN can be used instead of Subversion to download the revisions, however it cannot be used by the ZDoom makefiles to get revision information. If you do not have Subversion as well, any compiled build you do will show "r0" instead of the accurate revision number. Since ZDoom uses the revision number for backward compatibility with saved games, using such a build can create broken saves.

Experimental branches

While most of the development happens in the trunk, experimental branches are created for working on elements (new features or rewrites of existing subsystems) that need a lot of work before they can be finished to an acceptable level and stabilized enough to be merged in the main development trunk.

Unfinished branches

These branches were used for on-going projects, which means what they tried to achieve was not finished yet. They have been ported to the Git repository.

3dfloors3
Complete support for 3D floors, including sloped ones, in the software renderer.
doom64
Support for the DoomWikiLogoIcon.pngDoom 64 game, using the IWAD generated by DoomWikiLogoIcon.pngDoom64 EX.
float
Update of all single-precision floating point values (float) to double-precision (double).
minimap
Feature allowing to embed the automap anywhere in the HUD, and possibly even on textures. See this forum link for further information.
openal
Changes to the sound code to allow to use either FMOD Ex or OpenAL as the audio library, allowing to port ZDoom to more platforms.
scripting
Development of the long-awaited DoomScript.

Completed branches

These branches have served their purpose and been merged back in the trunk.

2.4.1
Served to separate between new features and bug fixes for the creation of ZDoom version 2.4.1, since version 2.4.0 suffered from critical bugs.
3dfloors (abandoned)
Support for Sector_Set3dFloor to ZDoom's software renderer (first attempt). Replaced by the 3dfloors2 branch.
3dfloors2
Support for Sector_Set3dFloor to ZDoom's software renderer, using a different approach from the first attempt.
automap
Used to develop the textured automap feature that was added shortly after the 2.5.0 version.
finale
Rewrite of the finale code, so as to externalize things such as the Doom II cast call endgame.
gc
Rewrite of the garbage collector system to be more efficient and prevent memory leaks.
menu
Rewrite of the menu code, allowing to define menu externally with a new MENUDEF lump.
newmapinfo
Used to develop a new format for MAPINFO, with a more robust syntax, without breaking compatibility with older MAPINFO lumps.
polyobjects
Served to allow polyobjects to roam in any sector, using a system similar to the Eternity Engine's "dynasegs", and then to allow complex shapes for polyobjects through dynamically-recalculated mini BSP trees.
usdf
Used to implement support for the Universal Strife Dialog Format and its variant the ZDoom Strife Dialog Format.
voxel
Support for Build-engine voxels.
