P_START is an optional marker used in conjunction with P_END in wad files. These markers will define any graphic in a supported image format as a patch. However, the P_ markers were not used in the Doom source code, and therefore ZDoom does not rely on them either. That said, some old utilities do assume they are needed and will not work correctly if they are absent.
