Description
From the developer's website:
Foreverhood is an independently developed single player First Person Shooter. Created through the super-human efforts of one man, Foreverhood is based on a source port of the classic Doom engine called ZDoom. The project began in 2003 as an experimental video project, but over each build the limits of the engine have been pushed in an attempt to create believable yet surreal environments. Combined with one of the most abstract stories about life and death, Foreverhood has shifted from an art project to an engaging action adventure game.
Currently in its forth development cycle, Foreverhood 2.0 aims to carry out the original vision of the project: to build an entirely new game as a piece of art.
Story
In the beginning, there is only energy; from this come all transformation. These energies exist in the furthest regions of the sub-concisions, forgotten memories of our pasts that have faded away from our minds. The energy from these thoughts manifests itself to form worlds that base their knowledge around the conditions from what that emotion is. Hence, happy and peaceful thoughts breed worlds where those are the only known feelings. All of these worlds exist in an orbitless space, occasionally colliding like atoms with other worlds. Two infant worlds colliding yields somewhat unexpected results, as new feelings are introduced into the lives of both of the worlds inhabitants. In some cases, they assimilate with each other and learn how to coexist. Other times, the energies are of such different extremes that the two worlds will engage each other in war to rid their lands of the intruders that seek to spoil the purity of what they stand for. This is the story of one of those times.
The story continues here.
Reception
Foreverhood is a unique project in more ways than one. First of all it does not use a single resource from Doom or any other game, which means all the WAD's content is 100% original. Foreverhood is highly praised for its strange and beautiful visual style. Players enjoyed the huge levels and complex architecture, as well as the unique characters and intriguing storyline. It was rewarded with a Cacoward, despite the game not actually having anything to do with Doom other than the engine.
